If bustling
Broadway and its profusion of colorful shops and theaters is the
heart of Downtown, then Grand Central Market is its palate. Playing
on a visitor's senses of sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste,
this bright cavern is a sprawling array of counters and stalls offering
a multi-ethnic menu of meats, poultry, fish, fruits and vegetables
and every type of rice, beans, grains and spice - all at bargain
prices. For those wanting a snack there is a variety of inexpensive
sit-down and stand-up eateries, making the market a place to graze
as well as gaze.
It is hard to
imagine that the building was designed and built in 1897 as an emporium,
only to have its ground floor remodeled in 1917 as a market very
much in the European style with a Latin flavor.
