Millions of dogs and cats are killed every year because not enough homes exist. Many of these are puppies and kittens -- the offspring of family pets. Pet overpopulation is a preventable problem that you can help solve simply by spaying or neutering your companion animals. Spaying and neutering is a safe procedure performed by veterinarians that prevents animals from reproducing by surgically removing the ovaries and uterus in females ("spaying") and the testes in males ("neutering").
Los Angeles Big Fix Program - Free & Low Cost Programs
In addition to reducing pet overpopulation, spaying/neutering has other positive effects on pets including DECREASING:
- aggression and temperament problems (but not protectiveness)
- "spraying" (urine marking) by male cats
- desire to roam in search of a mate, get into fights or run away
- risks of cancer (uterine, mammary and prostatic) as the animal ages
- annual cost of licensing a dog to $15 (an unaltered dog costs $100)
Dogs and cats are often safely spayed during pregnancy or while in heat. If you do not want the litter, spaying your pet could be an option, even if she is already pregnant or in heat. Each animal is unique. Only a licensed veterinarian can determine if your dog or cat is a candidate for this procedure. If you suspect that your companion animal is pregnant or in heat, consult your veterinarian without delay.
