Elder and dependent adult Abuse
Protecting Our Seniors - Fighting Elder Abuse
Every year an estimated 2.1 million older Americans
are victims of physical, psychological, or other forms
of abuse and neglect. For every case of elder abuse and
neglect reported to authorities, experts estimate that
there may be as many as 5 cases not reported (Source:
American Psychological Association). The Office of the City
Attorney remains committed to fighting and prosecuting
those individuals who prey on the more vulnerable members
of our society through the work of our our prosecutors and
our continued involvement with the Los Angeles Elders at
Risk Task Force and Los Angeles County Elder Abuse
Forensic Center, which engages public and community-based
organizations in an effort to increase prosecutions for crimes
against the elderly.
Honoring Our Seniors
The L.A. Pearls Award recognizes seniors for their
outstanding contributions, either though employment
or volunteer activities, to improve the quality of life for
all Angelenos and to promote a positive image of senior
citizens. This year 's LA Pearls Award for Service was
presented to 97-year old Encino resident Peggy Burke.
Ms. Burke is a singer, comedian and raconteur who performs
regularly at senior centers, her local library and at theater
groups despite being virtually blind.

City Attorney Sponsored Legislation
Protecting Victims From Assailants
SB 1491 (Kuehl), signed into law on June 30, 2006, insures that
agencies receiving funding to provide family violence services
are not forced to divulge personal information about their clients
to funding agencies. By securing such information, agencies can
provide shelter, counseling and other services to vulnerable
victims without fear of alerting their assailant to their location.
