Barnsdall Park is home to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House, which he designed and built for Aline Barnsdall in the 1920s. In 2007, the city completed the Great Lawn around the house as originally envisioned by Wright. This park features a football field, baseball diamond, basketball courts, a jogging path, children’s play area, barbecue pits, and picnic tables. This park features 20,000 square feet of open space with playground equipment, park benches, and wireless internet access. In addition to providing green and open space for neighborhood families to enjoy, the park incorporates permeable surfaces, a trash interceptor that filters large items, and root systems of indigenous plants in the "bio-swale" that filters out the toxins that would otherwise find their way into our waterways and onto our beaches. This playground expansion at Dayton Heights Elementary School is a joint use project between the city and school district. It includes playground equipment and a sports field. Students use the park during the school day and it is available for community organizations to use during evenings and weekends. This park includes Echo Park Lake, which features paddle boats that are available for rent, picnic tables, and a jogging path. This park and recreation center feature a baseball diamond, an indoor gym and basketball courts, a children’s play area, volleyball courts, soccer field, barbecue pits, and an auditorium. This park includes softball diamonds, lighted sports fields, basketball courts, barbecue pits, tennis courts, a children’s play area, and a pool. The City of Los Angeles operates sports and arts programs for people of all ages. In 2006, Joga Bonito Field opened at Glassell Park. This synthetic turf field is one of three soccer fields donated by Nike and provides a place for the neighborhood’s young people to play. Glenhurst Park Glenhurst Park Location: Atwater Village

Council President Garcetti worked with St. Stephen's Episcopal Church to convert a nuisance alley near Gower and Yucca into a peaceful green-space. This park features a swimming pool, auditorium, basketball courts, children’s play area, and community room. In addition to the park’s regular sports and recreational programming, this park was part of Council President Garcetti’s At the Park After Dark program, which kept the park open late during the summer of 2008 to give young people in the neighborhood a safe and supervised place to hang out and have fun. This community garden was built at the site of a former nuisance property. The garden features a gazebo and custom designed gates. The garden consists of individual plots and is managed by a neighbor. Juntos Park Juntos Park Location: Glassell Park

Juntos Park is a 1.6-acre site that was formerly a blighted, asphalt lot full of abandoned, vandalized cars and trucks directly adjacent to apartment buildings and single family residences in a densely populated, park-poor area. The colorful park features three play areas including a splash pad, and was designed primarily for preschool and elementary school age children. The park features a skate park, a recreation center, a playground, a basketball court, and green space. Security cameras have been installed to ensure the safety of its patrons. This park emphasizes services for cyclists using the adjacent Los Angeles River Bike Path. Amenities include native shade trees, seating, boulders, pathways, bicycle maps, and a custom bicycle kiosk. Crystal Street Park acts as an on-ramp to the bike path and encourages greater use of the bike path. As a part of the Los Angeles River Master Plan, this park provides more green space along the river. Laurel and Hardy Park Laurel and Hardy Park Location: Silver Lake

Madison West is a property near Los Angeles City College just north of the Hollywood Freeway that had been a blighted and empty lot. The 1/3-acre park features playground equipment for children and a picnic area. The community was essential in the planning and opening of this park -- from selecting its location to designing a park that could be used by neighborhood members of all ages. Adjacent to the Marsh Street Nature Park, the skate park provides a place for the neighborhood’s young people to gather and skate. Council President Garcetti worked with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust, and members of the Marsh Street neighborhood to engage the youth in planning for this skate park. In addition to providing a shady, green place to sit, Marsh Park incorporates an innovative approach to managing storm water runoff from the neighborhood. Through a section of concrete drainage pipe that has since been removed, storm water used to empty – untreated - into the river through the park. The ground has been lowered so that the dirty water coming from the city storm drains filters through the ground. The park has been replanted with native marshland and upland plants, which will assist with water filtration and encourage birds, mammals, and insects such as butterflies to inhabit the area. This small green space along the Los Angeles River includes a bench and a small garden of native plants. Previously, this site was a graffiti-filled dead end and a hangout for gangs. The park faces the river and makes a nice stop for river-path bicyclists or neighborhood strollers. Oros Green Street Oros Green Street Location: Elysian Valley

This small park, which offers a shady place for neighborhood residents or those walking along the L.A. River, was funded using vote-approved Proposition O funding and helps filter the neighborhood’s storm water run off using gravel and natural filtration techniques. This gateway to the L.A. River is a nice resting spot for walkers, joggers, and cyclists. It features a small landscaped area with two benches.


Red Car River Park Red Car River Park Location: Atwater Village

The park is located where the historic Pacific Electric Railway once entered Atwater Village and serves as the only access point to the river from the neighborhood. It overlooks the soft-bottom section of the river, which supports a variety of plant and animal life. The site features a broad sloping lawn, a seating area, native plants, and walkways. Friends of Atwater Village also commissioned a mural painting dedicated to the Red Car by Rafael Escamilla. LAPD-monitored security cameras have been installed to ensure the safety of the park’s patrons. Seily Rodriguez Park Seily Rodriguez Park Location: East Hollywood

This pocket park features playground equipment, green space, a basketball court, and benches. It is nestled between apartment buildings in its East Hollywood neighborhood near the Santa Monica Boulevard Community Charter School. The park bears the name of Seily Rodriguez, a neighborhood resident who was eight years-old when she was struck and killed by a car while walking to school.

This is a 10,000 square-foot park with trees, decorative lighting, picnic tables, and benches. The park also includes modern play facilities for children, a garden, a new and high wire fence, and resurfaced pavement around it. Adjacent to the Silver Lake Reservoir, this park features an off-leash dog area, multipurpose sports field, indoor gym, children’s play area, auditorium and picnic tables. After community members expressed concern about homeless encampments in this open space, Councilmember Garcetti facilitated a community-led design process to develop a new vision for the park, which now includes new trees, bike racks, and trash receptacles. The park received funding from a federal Community Development Block Grant. Tommy Lasorda Field of Dreams Location: Silver Lake

The park features a playground, landscaping, a barbecue pit and a community garden that neighbors of all ages can enjoy. The park’s most distinctive feature is the mural painted by Eliseo Silva. It is the largest Filipino American mural in the country and expresses the Filipino American experience. This joint-use site features soccer fields, basketball courts, a handball wall and a track for kids of all ages. The fields are located at Washington Irving Middle School in the Drew-Estara neighborhood of Glassell Park. Because this is a shared-use project between the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Unified School District, the community can use the school facilities during weekends and evenings.
