Materials & Waste Resources Division
The Materials and Waste Resources Division is permitting / inspecting
solid waste facilities, assisting businesses in preventing source
pollution, and helping oversee the
restoration of brownfields to productive reuse.
Key Activities
- Providing a leadership role on environmental
issues associated with Citywide development of brownfields
(contaminated or potentially contaminated vacant properties targeted
for safe, economically beneficial redevelopment)
The City, designated as a Federal Brownfields Showcase
Community, has budgeted over $4 Million for more than 60 projects in LA
- Operating the Local Enforcement Agency (LEA), a
fee-for-service, state-mandated program for permitting / inspecting
LA's solid waste facilities
The LEA conducts over 1,000 inspections annually of hundreds
of facilities and vehicles that handle or dispose of the City's solid waste.
- Working to improve public health and ensure
environmental justice in City Programs
EAD has partnered with community groups and schools to
educate the public on the causes and treatments of asthma, and has used grant
funding to replace mercury thermometers with non-toxic digital
thermometers. EAD also actively promotes environmental Justice in LA.
- Participating in a Citywide effort to create
a Sustainable Building Program that encourages use of environmental
features in buildings' design, construction and maintenance
The program led to the creation of the Sustainable Building
Residential Rehabilitation Guidebook and accompanying Sourcebook
