Sergeant Gary Tetzlaff


Sergeant Gary W. Tetzlaff is currently assigned to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Narcotics Division as the coordinator for the Support Training Against Narcotic Dependency (STAND) program. This program provides substance abuse awareness training to the corporate community of Los Angeles. Almost 3,000 adults (employees and supervisors) have attended one of the 82 STAND presentations given by Sergeant Tetzlaff since 1996.

Sergeant Tetzlaff has been with the Department since 1981 and has served in the patrol, detective, narcotics, and administrative functions of the Department. Prior to his promotion to sergeant, he served two and one-half years with the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Unit, where he helped implement and present the first DRE schools in Arizona, Virginia, New York, Colorado, and Indiana. He has also served as the administrator for the Department's Chemical Dependency Rehabilitation Program, Employee Assistance Unit.

Sergeant Tetzlaff became a certified DRE in 1984 and a DRE instructor in 1987. Since that time, he has taught drug influence recognition, drug symptomatology, the standardized field sobriety test battery, and other related topics to a wide range of audiences. These audiences include officers at LAPD schools and training days, physicians, nurses, the Department of the Treasury, the D.M.V. Bureau of Investigations, the U.S. Postal Service, the Federal Aviation Administration, the U.S. Air Force, the State of California Employment Development Department, and Northwestern University Traffic Institute (Chicago). He has also conducted management and supervisory classes, for Department personnel and for private industry, on how to recognize and help those employees who may be suffering from alcohol and other drug abuse problems.

Sergeant Tetzlaff teaches drug influence recognition to law enforcement officers throughout the United States and conducts training for DRE's selected to become instructors in the field of drug influence recognition. He also provides training on issues related to the signs and symptoms of substance abuse, on a regular basis, to schools and universities which include: California State University Dominquez Hills, Health in Public Education; L.A. Unified School District, Nursing Services; California State University Northridge, Health Science; and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), Developmental Studies Program, Department of Pediatrics.

Sergeant Tetzlaff served on the joint LAPD/National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Committee to establish a National training program on drug influence recognition. He is affiliated with the California Narcotic Officers' Association.

Sergeant Tetzlaff received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting from California State University, Fullerton, and he holds a California State Teaching Credential in the area of Administration of Justice.
