Conference on Drugs, Alcohol and Impaired Driving
June 27-29, 1999

Radisson Hotel South and Plaza Tower, Bloomington, Minnesota
Co-hosted by the IACP/DRE Section,
the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),
and the Minnesota State Drug Evaluation and Classification Program
A unique educational experience for DUI Enforcement Officers and Trainers, Drug Recognition Experts, Prosecutors, Toxicologists, Medical Professionals, and Highway Safety Advocates.

Background
Law enforcement is essential in efforts to combat the impaired driver. Training in Standardized
Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) and the Drug Recognition Expert Program (DRE) have been
instrumental in detecting and prosecuting impaired drivers.
The first of these conferences was overwhelmingly successful, and the attendance doubled the following year. This year, we draw from our experience and plan to make this another productive and educational event.
The DRE program has also been found to be an effective tool for other organizations seeking help in identifying drug-impaired individuals. Private and public corporations concerned with drug use in the work place, or other sensitive professions, will find this conference beneficial.

Networking
Considerable time will be devoted to working sessions during which participants will be divided
into moderated break-out sessions to discuss issues and concerns unique to their areas of interest.
These networking opportunities will be particularly beneficial to DRE agency coordinators, SFST
and DRE instructors, prosecutors and toxicologists involved in impaired driving cases. By
sharing information with other agencies, instructors will learn new training techniques and
program coordinators will gain insight into more effective management skills.
