The Los Angeles Police Department's Drug Recognition Expert Unit is the California Peace Officer's Standards of Training (POST) certified presenters of the NHTSA/IACP DRE curriculum. As such, the LAPD DRE Unit is the course presenter. In order to provide the POST certified DRE training to as many police agencies as possible, the LAPD DRE Unit presents this course at several locations, when hosted by the local agencies.
For additional information about these scheduled classes and training, please contact the LAPD DRE Unit office staff, (213) 485-8565.
We will be presenting two DRE Schools at our training facility, 227 North Lake Street, and six DRE Schools hosted by outside agencies. In 1999 we will be coordinating/supervising twenty-six days of DRE Certification Task Forces. The task forces will be two or three days in length and run on week days during mid-day watch hours (1000 - 1900 hours). In addition to these schools and certification task forces, there will be four DRE recertification training days, a separate DRE Instructor training day, and two DRE Instructor Schools.
New for 1999 will be a six day course combining the two day DRE Pre School, the three day Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) School and approximately eight hours of instruction and training on case preparation and court room testimony. Upon completion of the five days of classroom training, a one day DUI training task force will follow. This six day course, five days classroom and one day training task force, will be called the Impaired Driver Apprehension Program (IDAP). We will be presenting this new course for the first time in 1998, November 30 through December 5, 1998. Initially it will be offered to all new motor officers, but it is expected that most Collision Investigation (CI) officers and selected patrol officers will be eventually trained. This course will prepare the officers for the seven day DRE School. We will be presenting three IDAP Schools in 1999.

DRE Task Forces
In an attempt to facilitate the certification or student DREs, the LAPD DRE Unit will be coordinating several two day and three day DRE certification task forces in 1999.
The two day DRE certification task forces will be hosted at various LAPD geographic areas. The roll call, arrest, evaluation, and booking will all be conducted in the hosting area.
The three day DRE certification task forces will be held in the Rampart and Central Division Areas. Roll call and a short instruction period will be held at the LAPD DRE Facility, 227 North Lake Street. The DRE evaluation and booking will be conducted at Jail division, Parker Administrative Building, 150 North Los Angeles Street. These task forces will immediately follow any DRE School held at the LAPD DRE Unit Training Facility. Typically these certification task forces will be conducted for three days, Wednesday through Friday, from 1000 to 1900 hours.

DRE Recertification
The DRE recertification class is a one day DRE update course. It is our intention that each LAPD DRE attend one class annually. The IACP guidelines require it bi-annually. If you are nearing the expiration on your DRE certification you need to select a class date prior to your expiration date. Please select one date for recertification training. We may have to adjust some of the requests to accommodate scheduling. We need a minimum number of seven instructors each day. As DRE Instructors, you will be teaching and supervising portions of the recertification training.
Recertification dates:
DRE Instructor Update and Training
This training is exclusively for DRE Instructors and will include teacher training and updated DRE information (additional to that received during the recertification class). It is a one day class and probably will be held at the Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage, 4700 Zoo Drive, Los Angeles on August 10, 1999.
