March 2008
During the last month
in OurLA...
500 More
Officers - We reached a major milestone in our
effort to keep LA safe as we marked the addition of more
than 500 police officers to LAPD since July 2005, halfway
to meeting our pledge of putting 1,000
new cops on our streets.
School Reform - Our Partnership
for LA Schools gained more momentum with the appointment of an
all-star
leadership team, headed by veteran school reformer Angela
Bass.
Jobs for LA - We launched our
Citywide strategy to place 100,000 Angelenos
into living wage jobs by July 2010, opened a truck
driver training academy in the Valley, welcomed furniture
store Living Spaces and their more than 300 new jobs to Van
Nuys, and launched a DWP Solar Jobs
Initiative.
Clean Air at the Ports -
The Harbor Commission approved a landmark
plan to take 16,000 dirty diesel trucks off the road and
slash harmful emissions at the port by 80
percent.
Day of Service - More than
3,500 people joined us on the Westside in Mar Vista, Del Rey,
Venice and Palms in a day of commuinty
building, and cleaning and greening our
city.

Featuring Jobs for Angelenos
 Mayor Villaraigosa and
Councilmember Alarcon announce the opening of a truck driver
training academy on the site of the City's decommissioend
Lopez Canyon Landfill to prepare Angelenos to fill a
projected driver shortfall.
The Mayor unveiled his
job strategy to place 100,000 Angelenos into living-wage
jobs, part of a broader Economic Action Plan to help the
hardest hit families and businesses and bring more Angelenos
into the middle class.
With the national
economy in a slowdown, the Mayor and City
leaders are taking action to address the problems locally -
attracting business like Living Spaces to Van Nuys, working
with DWP to create a Solar Jobs Initiative, and launching a
truck driver training academy to prepare Angelenos to fill
available jobs.
OurLA...
Featuring Partnership for LA Schools All-Star Team
 Mayor Villaraigosa greets students
at Gompers Middle School before the announcement of the new
Partnership leadership team.
The Mayor's Partnership for LA
Schools received another boost with the naming
an all-star leadership team to drive the reform efforts.
Angela Bass, a veteran reformer who has lead one of the most
dynamic and successful school reform efforts in the nation
in San Diego, will take the reins as Superintendent
of
Instruction.
Two months after teachers and parents at six
LAUSD schools voted to join the Partnership for LA Schools,
the Mayor outlined the work being done at the
six schools that are giving teachers, parents and students
a voice in setting priorities and driving change while
they transition to join the Partnership in
July.
OurLA... Featuring Day of Service on the
Westside
 Mayor Villaraigosa helps paint the
recreation center at the Mar Vista Gardens Public
Housing Complex. The Mayor joined Councilmember
Bill Rosendahl and LAUSD Superintendent David Brewer
on March 15 at several project sites of the Mar
Vista, Venice, Del Rey and Palms Day of Service. See what
all the fun was about.
OurLA... Featuring Fashion Market

earn more than $103 million in annual revnues tied to
the market weeks held in the Fashion District. LA's

2008 Museum Associates /
LACMA
LACMA opened the Broad
Contemporary Art Museum, better known as BCAM, on
February 16 and already the Renzo Piano-designed museum is on
its way to becoming an LA icon. Bring your family and friends
to see the dazzling array of art on view in the new building
and enjoy the widely-noted outdoor sculptures as well,
including Chris Burden's popular Urban Light, a
monumental installation comprised of 202 vintage Southern
California streetlamps.
Also not to be missed, LACMA's acclaimed
modern galleries, brimming with works by Picasso, Matisse and
others. The museum's top-tier permanent collection and the
addition of BCAM help to cement Los Angeles's place as one of
the great cultural capitals of the world. Stop
by soon to see for
yourself. |
