MONTHLY SALARY
THE DUTIES
A Park Ranger provides public assistance and emergency services, including first aid, crowd and traffic control, firefighting, and search and rescue; patrols City parks, beaches, and other facilities to ensure park security; interprets and enforces City regulations and Municipal and Penal Code sections regarding park use; prepares and presents interpretive nature and environmental programs; and may provide radio communication to ranger units.

THE REQUIREMENTS
- U.S. citizenship, or must have applied for U.S. citizenship before the date of the Park Ranger application. Non-citizens must indicate in Box 37 on the City employment application the date they applied for U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens must obtain U.S. citizenship as soon as possible after being hired for continued employment; and
- Graduation from a recognized four-year college or university, with a major in Park Administration, Recreation, Botany, Zoology, Biology, Fire Science, Criminal Justice, or other field-oriented Natural, Social or Behavioral Science, or a closely related field;
- The following experience may be substituted for the education lacking on a year-for-year basis:
- Full-time experience, or the equivalent, as a Park Ranger or other law enforcement officer with a recognized peace officer organization.
- Full-time paid experience, or the equivalent, in the protection (or preparation and presentation of scientific information related to vegetation, wildlife, ecosystems or historical significance) of a park, forest, or public recreational or historical area or facility; and
- A qualifying score on the Park Ranger Qualifying Multiple-Choice Test.
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
A Standard First Aid and CPR or EMT-1 certificate is desired, but not required
EXPEDITED EXAMINATION PROCESS
The three tests in this examination will be administered on the last Wednesday of each month, beginning May 28, 2003. Applications may be submitted and will be reviewed on the day of the test to ensure Minimum Qualifications are met. If you wish to have your application reviewed at an earlier date, you may submit it at any time at least two weeks prior to the test date. Monthly testing for Park Ranger may end without further notice.

THE DAY OF THE EXAMINATION
- On the day of testing, report to Room 100 of the Personnel Building (700 E. Temple Street, Los Angeles, CA, 90012) at 8:00 a.m. for review of your application.
- Bring your (1) completed application, and (2) a photo identification with your signature.
- You may be taking a Physical Ability Test, so be sure to wear clothing appropriate for athletic activity.
- Be sure to park in a pay lot or on the street at a 10-hour meter.
- All candidates will take the multiple-choice test in the morning.
- Candidates will then be given a break during which the multiple-choice test will be scored. (You may bring a small snack with you to eat during this break.)
- Candidates may not leave the test site until they have completed the entire examination, including during breaks.
- Candidates will be informed of their multiple choice test score, and those who pass will take the essay-based Training and Experience Questionnaire and Physical Ability Test.
- This will complete the examination process, and candidates will be notified of their final examination score by mail.

QUALIFYING MULTIPLE-CHOICE TEST: Candidates must pass a qualifying test, consisting of multiple-choice questions, which may examine for arithmetic, reading comprehension, judgment and decision making skills, and other necessary knowledge and abilities.
PHYSICAL ABILITY TEST: Candidates who pass the multiple-choice test will be required to pass a Physical Ability Test designed to measure coordination, agility, strength, and endurance.
EVALUATION OF OVERALL QUALIFICATIONS: This evaluation will take place only for candidates who achieve a passing score on the Qualifying Multiple-Choice Test and Physical Abilities Test. The evaluation, conducted by a panel of subject matter experts based on job-related criteria, will consist of a review of the candidate's employment application, including background and training; the information provided on the Training and Experience Questionnaire; and the level of performance on the Qualifying Multiple-Choice Test.
The first date scheduled for the qualifying multiple-choice test is WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 2003, in Los Angeles.
APPOINTMENT IS SUBJECT TO:
Possession of a valid California driver's license and a good driving record. Candidates with a record of serious or frequent traffic violations may be disqualified, AND
Passing a thorough and comprehensive background investigation, AND
Completion of a thorough medical examination, including a psychological inventory which includes a written test and may include a clinical interview, AND
Based on City Policy, before being hired, candidates may be required to undergo a DRUG and ALCOHOL screening test.
Signing the Acknowledgment of Reimbursement of Park Ranger Training Costs.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
A Park Ranger's initial assignment will be in a position that has been designated as a temporary training position by the Civil Service Commission. Employment in such positions is for a limited duration in which the trainee is expected to successfully complete a law enforcement training program approved by P.O.S.T. Upon completion of the training program, employees will receive a regular appointment to the class of Park Ranger and begin a six-month probationary period in the Recreation and Parks Department. Park Rangers are subject to reassignment of work locations, rotating work shifts, and changing days off.
NOTES:
- You may take this examination every six months. Your name may be removed from the open competitive eligible list after six months.
- Applications are accepted subject to review to ensure that minimum qualifications are met. Candidates may be disqualified at any time if it is determined that they do not possess the minimum qualifications stated on this bulletin.
- This examination is based on a validation study, and as provided by Civil Service Commission Rule 4.20, the written test will not be subject to candidate inspection.
- City Ordinance #171665 requires that the costs of Park Ranger training are subject to repayment to the City by the Park Ranger, on a pro-rated basis, if the Park Ranger leaves City employment within 60 months of completing training, and if, within one year of leaving the City, accepts an equivalent position with an enforcement agency.
