Explore lasewers.org to learn about the City's wastewater system including sewers, wastewater treatment and water reclamation plants, and how the Department of Public Works manages the construction, operation and maintenance of these systems and related facilities. Point and click your way through some of Los Angeles' most interesting, but lesser known, public works infrastructure and discover how it affects your life each day. Find out how City sewers serve residences and commercial and industrial customers through the City’s Sewer System Management Plan and learn how the wastewater system:

  • is being improved through construction and application of new technologies
  • protects our health and the environment while meeting strict water quality requirements and the demands of a growing population
  • operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to serve the needs of over 4 million customers in Los Angeles, and 29 contracting cities.
  • produces biogas, biosolids, and reclaimed water for beneficial reuse
  • is being planned for the future through the Integrated Resurces Plan - an innovative, stakeholder driven wastewater and water infrastructure planning process

The Department of Public Works –- the City’s third largest department – is responsible for the services and infrastructure that keep Los Angeles running. The Department consists of five Bureaus that design, build, inspect, and maintain the city’s sewers, treatment plants, streets and street lighting systems. Engineering, Sanitation, and Contract Administration are the three bureaus that do most of the work involved with wastewater facility construction and operation.
